Kaleidoscope is Live! And Comes Highly Recommended.
The Kaleidoscope fics are live, and while I can't tell you which fic I nearly killed myself writing until next Saturday, I can recommend quite a few of them.
Astronomy, Applied. Fanfic. Inheritance Trilogy, N.K. Jemisin.
Fair warning: I am totally biased in recommending this one, because it was my gift, and seems to have been tailor-made to hit me where I live. It has developments in science and developments in gods and the inherent conflict in attempting to practice science in a world that contains gods, all in one tidy package. Excellent work, Anonymous Pinch-Hitter! Remind me to write you something awesome when next we meet in challenge-land.
따뜻함 (Warmth). Fanart. Coffee Prince.
So, there wasn't any Coffee Prince fanfic this year, which makes me sad, but there was some pretty awesome fanart. My favorite was probably this wallpaper, which is warm and comforting and may currently be lurking behind my dozens of currently-open programs, somewhere.
How Vivian Shing Stole Everything She Wanted. Saving Face (2004).
I didn't know anything about this fandom, but then again, I didn't really need to know anything about it to enjoy a fluffy, sexy, jewel thief/insurance agent AU.
Qutulun. Fancomic. Mongolian History RPF.
This is a charming photomanip comic about a historical lady who decided she wanted none of this "husband" business. Short, but awesome. No source knowledge necessary.
Pins of Bone Six By Ten. Fanfic. Epic of Gilgamesh.
I was a little leery going into this one, because it's been a really long time since I read Gilgamesh and I wasn't sure I'd get it. However, it turns out that as long as you remember that Gilgamesh and Enkidu were best bros, and that Enkidu didn't come out of the relationship so well, you're fine. And you owe it to yourself to read this. The prose is wonderful, lush and lyrical and perfectly appropriate to the subject matter.
Pacific Navigators. Fanfic. Pacifics by Paul Davey.
This fic is an example of why I love small-fandom challenges. This author took a painting and created a world, then told an excellent story about technology and the way it changes our lives within that world. If you don't read anything else from this rec set, read this.
If those weren't enough, there's a list of all the fanworks, gifts and treats alike, here. Go give them some love.
Now, I need a favor in return: I'm about to embark on a three-day cross-country drive with my father. My type-A, ADD father, whom I adore but who also is not, shall we say, good at transitional periods, change, sharing, or driving for extended periods of time. We have audiobooks and NPR podcasts, but those only go so far. For the sake of our filial relationship, please, recommend to me any good, novel-length fic you've read recently, preferably on the AO3 for ease of Kindle-ing. I don't care about the fandom or pairing, though I have been heavily into the Avengers movieverse lately.
